Welcome to Høgelibu! We rent out our family cabin just outside of Voss when we’re not using it ourselves.

We’ve got a super cozy Tiny Cabin sleeping 5 persons, and a roomy Main Cabin sleeping 8+ people.

Both are well equipped and feature a panoramic view and separate outdoor areas. Høgelibu is an excellent hub for visiting Bergen, Voss, Voss Gondola, Hardanger, Trolltunga, Vøringsfossen waterfall, Flåmsbana scenic railway, Stegastein, Kjeåsen, Dronningstien and more. The hiking possibilities are endless.

In the winter you’ll find cross country ski slopes withinin walking distance and Voss Resort (downhill) only 20 min away.

Drive: Bergen-Voss

Most of our guests at Høgelibu will do this drive as a part of their journey. Why not make it a special one?

There are several route options that’s more of an experience than driving along the E16 all the way (though it is also a scenic road).

ROUTE 1: Along the FJORD

Bergen - Trengereid - Nordheimsund - Granvin - Voss

Highlights:

This route starts out along the E16 to Arna - or along the Rv 587 via Nesttun to Arna. In Arna you can visit the Janus outlet. Janus is a Norwegian manufacturer of wool clothing, and have their fabric outlet located along the Rv 587.

From Arna, follow E16 along the Osterøyfjord. On the other side/northern side of the fjord you can see Osterøy island. It is the largest Norwegian island not located directly adjacent to the ocean, and the second largest such island in Northern Europe.

When you arrive at the roundabout at Trengereid, you may want to take a break and buy some food at Hjelle Bakeri. It is a popular stop for many locals to buy a fresh baguette.

Then follow the signs towards Norheimsund along Fv 7 road. You will first reach Samnanger located by the Samnanger fjord.

Further up in the valley, you’ll pass by the Mørkhølen rest stop, where you can have a look at the

Mørkhølsfossen waterfall.

Just before you enter the Fossenbratte tunnel, you can park your car along the road on the right hand side and walk up along the old road outside of the tunnel to the Fossenbratte waterfall.

After the tunnel you’ll pass by the Eikedalen ski centre, the closest ski centre to the Bergen area, popular among the locals in the winter. Then you will reach Kvamskogen area on the peak altitude before reaching Norheimsund and the Hardangerfjord. A lot of people residing in Bergen have a their cabins at Kvamskogen.

After Kvamskogen, you will descend towards Norheimsund. Just before Norheimsund, you should stop at the Steinsdalsfossen waterfall, where it is possible to walk along the path behind the waterfall itself.

When you reach the Hardangerfjord, follow the Fv 7 towards Øystese and Granvin. Now, just enjoy the views driving along the Hardangerfjord until you reach Granvin. It is really beautiful!

When you reach Granvin, go left towards Voss along the Rv 13 along the Granvinsvatnet lake. At the end of the lake, you might want to detour to the right into the Skjervsvegen just before passing Seim camping (on your left hand side), detouring from Rv 13. After about 4 km, you’ll reach the Skjervsfossen waterfall on your right hand side. The road passes both the bottom of the waterfall (where you can follow a path in to the waterfall itself) and the top (where there’s a rest area with toilets and paths to different viewpoints).

Continue until the road end out on the Rv 13 again. Take right towards Voss.

When you reach Palmafossen, you’re passing the last grocery store before Høgelibu, Rema 1000 and Kiwi. To get to Høgelibu, take left towards Skutle/Voss tur- og skisenter, just before the grocery stores. Welcome!

ROUTE 2: OFF THE BEATEN TRACK: A NARROW road in the valley

A: Bergen - Dale - Eksingedalen - Evanger - Voss
B: Bergen - Modalen - Eksingedalen - Evanger - Voss

Do you like narrow roads off the beaten track, driving on non-touristy roads? Then this route is for you!

Compared to driving E16 all the way,

  • 2A is an alternative route between Dale and Evanger, and

  • 2B is an alternative route between Bergen and Evanger.

Route 2A

Drive along the E16 from Bergen to Dale. See the description of Route 1 for details about this section. After passing through Trengereid and Stanghelle, you’ll reach Dale. It is an industrial village, blooming after it got connected with Bergen by rail in 1883. The textile factory at Dale started in 1873, and eventually became Dale of Norway, producing high quality wool knitware. Dale is also known for it’s hydroelectric power plant.

After passing through Dale, go left on the 556 towards Romarheim. You won’t drive for long before the road gets significantly more narrow. But don’t worry, every couple of hundred meters there will be short widenings of the road where to cars can pass each other.

You’ll first reach Straume bridge. Just before the bridge, you can go left and visit Skipshelleren (english). There has probably lived people here since the stone age(!). Read more about it on the website.

Then you’ll pass through Stamnes, where you can visit the Laksegilja (maps).

Continue along the fjord and consider a short stop at the Hesjadalsfossen waterfall (maps). Eventually you’ll reach the end of the fjord at Eidslandet. Continue along the river until the intersection where you don’t want to go through the tunnel (see Route 2B) towards Mo, but keep right towards Eksingedalen. Now, just enjoy the small roads and the scenery as you drive in the Eksingedalen valley. Just before nesheim church, keep right. When you finally descend into Evanger, you’ll be back E16. Hopefully you appreciated a “time-out” from the more busy road.

Route 2B

Follow E39 northbound out of Bergen towards Ålesund. After leaving Bergen, you’ll cross the Nordhordlandsbrua bridge. It is a combined cable-stayed and pontoon bridge. You can read more about it at wikipedia, if you’re into bridges.

Follow along the E39 through Knarvik and along the Osterøyfjorden on your right. On the other side/eastern side of the fjord you can see Osterøy island. It is the largest Norwegian island not located directly adjacent to the ocean, and the second largest such island in Northern Europe.

Just after crossing a river, leave E39 to your right towards Modalen along the 569. In the end of the fjord you’ll pass through the village of Mo. Don’t go up the 345, but keep following the 569 through the long tunnel. At the other side, you can go right towards Dale or go left through Eksingedalen and end up in Evanger. ROUTE 3: Over the mountain

This route explores the mountain south/west of Voss. A narrow and scenic road awaits you.

Route 3

Drive along the E16 from Bergen to Dale. See the description of Route 1 for details about this section. After passing through Trengereid and Stanghelle, you’ll reach Dale. At Dalekvam take right towards Bergsdalen following Fv 5400 up the Bergsdalen valley. This used to be the main road to Voss before they opened the new E16. You’ll follow the valley up to the Hamlargrøvatnet before descending down to Bulken and E16 again. There are lots of mountaintops here that you can hike to, as well as open mountain cabins such as Kiellandbu.
